Through fostering relationships with local leaders, we help communities address their most pressing needs through holistic Community Economic Development (CED). The objective is lasting economic, social, and spiritual change to give a “hand up” to the rural poor.
EMPRENDEDORA TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL
Opportunity International Nicaragua founded the Emprendedora High School to address the need for quality rural education. “Emprendedora” in Spanish means “entrepreneur,” and students graduate equipped with a technical degree in sustainable agriculture or sustainable tourism — poised to be leaders in their communities and their careers.
AGRICULTURAL PROGRAM
Opportunity International Nicaragua is focused on improving profits for rural low-income farmers through access to global markets for their cassava harvests. Our program generates higher yields, while offering beneficial financing along with better product pricing.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Opportunity works alongside micro-entrepreneurs, cooperatives, and community leaders to leverage their assets and address the greatest felt needs. By empowering leaders and communities with financial or technical support and enabling them to take on their most pressing issues, our methodology promotes capacity building and the strengths of each community for local groups to create lasting change in infrastructure, social issues, and spirituality.
PACAYA LODGE
In partnership with Opportunity International Nicaragua, Pacaya Lodge is another program that uses business to fight poverty. The five star resort provides internship opportunities and practicum training for students in the sustainable tourism path at Emprendedora High School and purchases food products from the school to help subsidize the cost of the high school to relieve families of the financial burden of a quality education.
